Here is the breakdown of what students can expect for each week of the course. Be aware that this schedule is subject to change at any time during the course due to extenuating circumstances.

Week 1 (March 1-5):Class Intro, Understanding noun use in Academic English

  • Review course syllabus and course outline
  • Working with Regular and Irregular plural nouns
  • Using nouns as adjectives, noncount nouns and count nouns

Week 2 (March 8-12): Nouns continued, Articles and Determiners

One of the problems that many Chinese learners face when using English is knowing how and when to use articles and determiners. When do you use the articles a, an or the with a noun? Should I use all, any, few, or many when talking about a quantity of a noun like money ? We'll focus issues such as these in this unit while looking at the different situations for using articles and determiners with nouns.
  • Understanding basic article usage, including indefinite and definite articles
  • Distinguishing the uses of possessive determiners

Week 3 (March 15-19): Determiners continued and Pronouns

  • Personal and Impersonal pronoun use and noun agreement
  • Reflexive pronouns
  • Using "other"

Week 4 (March 22-26) Verb Tenses Use

  • Review of the twelve verb tenses in English, such as present, present progressive, present perfect, and present perfect progressive and so on.
  • We will focus on using the verb tenses that English learners, particularly Chinese, have the most trouble using.
